Power Transformer
Is there any estimated relationship between the MVA & voltage rating of a power transformer and its weight?
Is there any rule of thumb equation out there that can give a rough estimate of a transformer's weight given the MVA & voltage ratings? A curve fit equation perhaps?
One can see that the size/weight of a transformer does indeed go up for an increase in power rating, but I would like something a bit more quantitative.
In the case of a line transformer operating at 50 Hz., here are some rules of thumb:
primary turns = 45 * primary voltage / core area
secondady turns = 48 * secondary voltage / core area
core area = 1.1 * sqrt ( P )
Where:
core area = cross square area of the core going through the coil in square centimeters
primary voltage = AC voltage fed to primary in volts
secondary voltage = AC voltage wanted on secondary in volts
P = transformer power
The secondary needs a little bit more turns per voltage because there are always some losses inside the transformer core and coil wire.
You can assume that the core is laminated iron, so you can calculate the weight of the core, then go after the weight of the wire, then add in case, connecting hardware and whatever cooling methodology (if any) you choose to apply.
