How do i get distortion on my guitar?

First guitar for me
and my amp doesnt have an overdrive or gain button
it just has volume,bass, treble, middle, and mid-frequency buttons

It's true as someone else have said that overdrive and distortion is really, or at least should be considered, two different things. In theory, overdrive is the sound of the tubes on a tube amp being saturated (driven to distort/into overdrive).

Distortion is commonly considered to be produced by a distortion device (most commonly a distortion pedal) placed in the signal chain, or a built in distortion effect.

There are two types of internal (built in) or external (pedals) effects in use. Distortion effects are the "fuzz" type. Then you have what may be called overdrive, which either is used to help push a tube amp to overdrive, or to emulate the sound of a saturated tube amp.

On a tube amp with a separate preamp control, you can crank up the preamp tube/s, and still keep the volume down - since the output tubes may independently be delivering less power/lower volume. This gives a somewhat less desired overdrive (the preamp tubes).

On a tube amp which only controls the output volume, you will have to drive the output tubes to produce overdrive. This means loud (with a capital L) on most real tube amps. However, this is also the sound that is perhaps most "musical" and sought after.

You will have to test out both types of effect and various brands of pedals and amps to find something that suites your taste.

Guitar Effects - Distortion

A Distortion pedal functions by ... well, by "distorting" the original sound wave. Some characteristics of a sound wave are a certain shape, a certain amplitude, and a certain frequency. A distortion pedal will distort some or all of these characteristics by electronic manipulation to achieve the desired distorted tone.

Typically distorted sound is "dirtier" than the original "clean" sound. If you're playing "edgy music" ... rock, hard rock, grunge, metal, things like that ... you're probably seeking a distorted sound.

While current distortion pedals manipulate the tone through solid-state electronics (most often -- some pedals use tubes, but these are most effective in "overdrive" pedals), musicians in the pre-pedal world often used damaged equipment -- amplifiers with bad or missing tubes, speakers cut with slits or tears, etc -- to achieve a distorted sound!

A distortion pedal and a "fuzz" box are basically the same thing -- both distort the original clean signal. The difference between the two is the degree and character of the distortion.

You probably do not need both a fuzz and a distortion pedal. But ... depending on the style of music you're seeking -- you'll find that one works better for you than the other. The only way to determine which is best for you is to take some time at your local music store and try several pedals.

Distorted guitar offers a thicker and heavier "base" -- a single guitar can provide a solid backing for a tune. Distortion also leads to greater sustain and can feedback in a pleasing manner. Distortion is most commonly used for solo guitar ... but is also effective when using power chords. However, fully voiced chords quite often lose their punch when distorted. Distortion can also be effective for bass guitar ... although you will generally use a pedal specifically designed for a bass.

Helpful Tips for Finding a Guitar Teacher and Learning to Play Guitar

Here are some tips on how to get the most out of your guitar lessons –guitar lessons you are taking now or guitar lessons you may take in the future. They are merely presented as tools to be used in making your experience of learning guitar as rewarding and enjoyable as possible. If you have any questions regarding the following suggestions, please consult with your guitar teacher. These tips will enhance your experience of learning guitar whether your guitar lessons are with an acoustic guitar teacher, an electric guitar teacher, a bass teacher, a classical guitar teacher, or a metal guitar teacher.

• References: Many students feel more comfortable with a guitar instructor who provides references, and, if that applies to you, then you should inquire as to whether the guitar teacher offers references. However, personal compatibility and rapport with your guitar teacher is of the utmost importance, and you won't be able to accurately assess those vital components without meeting the guitar teacher in person and getting a sense of that guitar teacher’s approach to you and learning guitar.

Another thing to keep in mind is that the references provided by the guitar teacher will be slanted in that guitar teacher's favor. It's not likely that any guitar teacher will provide the names of students who weren't satisfied with the guitar teacher or the guitar teacher’s approach to learning guitar. It is also important to keep in mind that, just as you would have to ultimately judge the teaching ability of any guitar teacher based on your own personal assessments, you will also be ultimately relying on your own instinct to assess the information provided you by the students who are supposedly recommending that particular acoustic, bass, classical, metal, or electric guitar teacher.

• Cell Phones: You have the right to expect your guitar teacher’s undivided attention during your guitar lesson, and he has the right to expect the same from you. So, if your guitar instructor requests that you turn off your phone during the guitar lesson, don’t hesitate to do so. You will probably find that the experience of learning guitar will not only be more fully absorbed, but that your guitar instructor will be better able to give you the guitar lesson that he or she wants to give you.

• Practicing: Again, this is a matter of many minds. Some guitar teachers may advocate a strict discipline of practicing a specific amount of time per day, while other guitar instructors may suggest that you play for the pleasure of it when the mood strikes. As with the guitar teaching approaches of individual guitar instructors, you owe it to yourself to find a guitar teacher whose practicing guidelines are in harmony with your personality and your goals.

• Levels of playing ability: beginner guitar lessons, intermediate guitar lessons , advanced guitar lessons, pro guitar lessons. How does one decide to which level he or she is best suited. These are arbitrary values provided to merely give you a guideline in making your selection of a guitar teacher. The best thing to do is to fully discuss your guitar playing experience with the guitar instructor you are interviewing. Can I use a looper pedal on my Roland Cube 30x - possibly by modding in an effects loop?

I've been looking into getting a looper pedal - such as the Boss RC-2 - to practice and perform with. Then, it dawned upon me that my amp, the Roland Cube 30x, does not have the send/return jacks to support the pedal in an effects loop. I've thought of two possible solutions:

1) Crack it open, cut the wire to the subwoofer and wire in two 1/4 inch jacks
2) Somehow make use of the built in, bypassing headphone jack and/or the 1/8 inch aux in.

Any idea how I would go about doing this?
I know I can place the pedal in front of the amp, but I'd like to be able to use different effects on different tracks - for example, solo with distortion without making all the background loops play distorted

Uh, can't quite see your problem...

I am confident you can have the looper in front of your amp - in other words between your guitar signal and the amp - without any problems what so ever. Sure, it's common to have delays and similar effects in the effects loop when one is present, but many put it in front of the amp.

Try one out, and I'm sure you can get by - and then some - without the effects loop. At least I would not try to modify the amp or pedal.

I use several older amps without any effects loop, and on those I always place the effects in between the guitar and amp input.

If you're still unsure you might want to contact Boss support and ask them.

Ive also got a bypass looper. Its got 2 loops, one i will put the tuner in (Korg DT 10) but im unsure about the second. What do you suggest

How to get a metal bass tone?

Need a few tips on where to have the equalizer settings set (low, mid, high) for a nice metal sound on my bass guitar when in Drop C (CGCF).

At the moment I have no effects pedal or anything so all I've got at my disposal are the equalizer knobs, any help would be appreciated

With bass guitar in a metal situation mids are always your friend. They help give your tone a lot of edge and growl plus they often fill in the frequency space left more or less empty by every other instrument in the band so an added bonus of boosting your mids is your sound stands out more. So step one is to boost your mids. Highs add even more edge and growl to your sound however string noise tends to become unbearable with highs boost too much and unless your amp has tweeters it wont be able to produce these higher overtones that well anyways. So step two is to either leave your high settings flat (knob at 12 o'clock with most amps) or boost them ever so slightly. Most people think it must be a good idea to boost the bass in their bass sound however more often then not it just makes your bass sound muddy and interferes with the kick drum making your bass sound and the sound of the kick drum hard to tell apart. Also it tends to mask your mids and highs with low end muddiness and while it may make you sound big and powerful when you're practicing at home in most live situations your sound is just lost in the mix when you pump up your bass. So as blasphemous as it sounds a gentle cut in the bass frequency range is actually a good thing in a metal band situation. So to wrap things up:

Bass - A little cutting here is actually a good thing
Mids - Boost away (A fun thing I like to do is really crank up my mids and use the bridge pickup during bass solos to get a great "jaco" sound: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yGxR5bF5PDU )
High - Flat or boost slightly if the string noise isn't too harsh to your ears.

Help With Boss metal zone, and Ibanez TS-9?

Right now I am running multiple effects, and I have a problem with 2 of them. They go as such-

Boss Noise Supressor> Boss Chromatic Tuner> Dunlop Zakk Wylde Wah> Ibanez Tube Screamer> Boss MT-2> Ibanez TS-9> MXR Phase 90> Boss Super Chorus> Boss OC-2 Octaver> Rocktron Short Timer> Bespeco Volume pedal.

It was my understanding that a Tube screamer could be used to boost the gain on another distortion pedal, yet when I have both the metal zone and the tube screamer on, there is a loud screeching sound unless the gain is almost at zero on my MT-2

I am currently just running this though the clean channel of a Line 6 Spider 3, as I will not get my Tube amplifier for another Month. I have been building this pedal board in anticipation of getting it. PLease help. Is there something wrong with one of my pedals?

you neeed to put the tube screamer before the distortion of the same problem and it took me like a half an hour the tube screamer is an obnoxious pedal and if your running on a pedal board just remember put the tube screamer then the ditortion then everything else
