Learn to Play the Guitar: Which Learning Method is Right for You?

There is an assortment of methods for learning to play the guitar and you need to choose the method that will work best for you.

1. Traditional

Generally starts off by teaching the basics of notation (reading music). Learning to read and play simple melodies progresses to bass string accompaniments and simple duets using a limited selection of notes, which is what you need as a beginner. The advantage of this method is that it is always taught in tandem with learning to read music; the best way to learn to read music is by doing it in conjunction with learning an instrument. Also, reading and understanding notation will transfer to any subsequent musical instrument.

2. Folk

This method leans towards a chordal approach, that is, learning to play a collection of notes together (a chord) and using various strumming patterns to accompany a song. Sometimes this approach may include some notation reading, but it is generally aimed at the student who does not want to learn how to read music.
Personally, I feel that such an approach is missing an opportunity to learn and understand notation. A traditional approach will lead naturally to learning chords anyway. You can always teach yourself chords from a chord dictionary if you want to combine two approaches.

3. Tablature

This method teaches through a pictorial representation of the strings showing where to put your fingers.

5 --3----------------------------
6 -------------------------------

This picture means you fret:

the 2nd string at the 1st fret
the 4th string at the 2nd fret and
the 5th string at the third fret
1st and 3rd strings are left open or unfretted.

This is, perhaps, too complex a method for the beginner to grasp. It can be used to enhance the playing of a more experienced guitar player.

Guitar Lessons

When learning to play any musical instrument, it is always a good idea to at least start off by having some lessons from an experienced tutor, if only to avoid getting into bad habits. A good teacher will advise about style, technique, notation, posture, phrasing and guitar care. As you progress you may need to find a teacher attuned to your own particular needs and tastes, but at the beginning of the learning experience, the aims will be the same, to get the basics of the instrument sorted out and to achieve results that are pleasing.

Buying Fender Acoustic Guitars Safely Online

When you're seeking Fender acoustic guitars to buy online, it's important that you don't get ripped off. What this means for you is, on the one hand you do want to find the best deal and the Internet is a great way of doing that; but on the other hand, you might end up buying a Fender acoustic that you never tried out, plus you need to remember that when it comes to musical instruments you get what you pay for. You may get a lot more than you pay for if you shop at an online auction site such as eBay, and they provide ways to minimize the risk of being ripped off. If you choose eBay, always check the seller's rating. A seller with a high seller rating is just as safe as shopping at a retailer with a high reputation.

Needless to say, one pretty safe way of shopping online for Fender acoustic guitars is to go to the Fender website. If you do this, you can search for Fender-approved dealers in your local area that you can visit either online or in person. You really don't have to worry much about getting ripped off by these guys. However, keep in mind the rule of thumb that under normal circumstances you don't want to buy an acoustic guitar for less than $400. You can find plenty of them that are less than that, but they are not of high quality construction or design--not even if they do say "Fender". You will be compromising sound and physical playing quality by going cheap. However, there are ways of going cheap on price without going cheap on quality.

Now, you can find good Fender acoustic guitars online for under $400, but you have to take some special steps. One of these would be to shop at eBay or another online auction house. Allthough you do have to act with caution when shopping online, eBay remains one of the safest online auction market places on the internet. Use common sense, and you won't have too much to worry about. Another method is to do an Internet lookup for individuals selling a Fender acoustic guitar. You can check online classified ads, Craig's List, and so forth. But once again, you run the risk of paying more for something than you should while trying to save money--and that means you would probably end up getting ripped off, either by accident by some ignorant person or on purpose by some low-life person. So eBay is probably a better idea, as eBay has a seller rating system so you can know that you are shopping from a seller with a high approval rating.

If you are looking for an unused guitar, you may want to check out some other places as well; if nothing else just to compare prices. Musician's Friend is a good site for this. They are like a huge musical instrument and equipment warehouse, and because they have so much volume they can sell most of their merchandise for less than the manufacturer's suggested retail price. There are also plenty of hands-on reviews of instruments and equipment at their website. They will ship what you buy right to your door. And sometimes, they give you free shipping. Check it out as they are known for low prices on new guitars. If you find a cheaper one of a similar model on eBay, you know that you are getting a good price. Give it some time, and check eBay again. You may find a better price in a week or a month. Otherwise, you can be confident that you are getting a good price on Musician's Friend.

Take your time, shop around, compare prices. It is the only way you can know that you got a good price on your Fender Acoustic Guitar.

Have you ever used the book "The Principles of Correct Guitar Practice"?

It was written by Jamie Andreas. Have you read it and applied the principles to your guitar practice? Does it work? Is it really necessary to practice in that manner? For me, it makes practice incredibly tense and boring. I can't stand practicing at such a slow pace. Is it still possible to become a good guitar player without using the principles of correct practice?

No, I've never read the book, "The Principles of Correct Guitar Practice." Back in 1956, when I first began to play, I bought a chord and theory book (Nick Manoloff's Chord Book) that I still have today. Also I purchased "Leeds Guitar Dictionary of 2400 Chords" which I use at times.

If something bores me in my practice, I move on to other avenues. There are scores of great guitarists that had probably developed bad practice habits. I believe among the best ways to improve your playing is to watch other guitarists perform, and, if given the opportunity, sit in with them and do some jamming. Such sessions provide a lot more than the standard practice sessions can do.

My axiom through the years is: "When you feel like playing, play with feeling."

So do it.

What acoustic electric guitar should I get?

Im looking for an acoustic electric guitar. I want a slimmer body cause Im small and something that sounds good and of course inexpensive. Not sure what to get. Any help or ideas?

I think an Ovation would be perfect. They are fairly cheap and are super slim thanks to their rounded backs. Lots of people are put off by the fact that their backs aren't wood, but honestly play one and you can't tell the difference once bit. Add in the fact that Ovations have easily the most "electric guitar" feeling necks (slim and fast) and its an easy choice for me.

Acoustic electric guitars: is this not a contradiction in terms? After all, “acoustic” describes music, or a musical instrument that is not electronically amplified; “electric” however, implies that the music or musical instrument is electronically amplified. Well actually, the wonderful thing about acoustic electric guitars is that they combine both the qualities of the acoustic, which is to control, absorb, and carry sound, as well as the qualities of the electric which is to amplify the sound. Acoustic electric guitars give the player and the listener alike the full benefit of both acoustic and electric qualities.

Acoustic guitars have a hollow body (or at least a portion of the body is hollow) like acoustic instruments, but they also have electric pickups mounted directly onto the body. The purpose of an acoustic electric guitar is to get the tones of an acoustic, but with an increased volume. The most basic and original kind of acoustic electric guitar is an acoustic that has been fitted to include pickups. When these were first introduced, the major problem was with feedback. The electronic pickups couldn’t handle all the vibrations of the instrument and the electrical currents, so a screaming feedback often resulted. In addition, the acoustic sound was often compromised as well because the electric pickups simply could not manage the high frequency sounds.

Today, most acoustic electric guitars have piezoelectric pickups which require a preamplifier made directly into the body of the guitar. The more advanced acoustic electric guitars of today have eliminated these problems and enhanced the quality of sound as they are designed to be truly acoustic-electric as opposed to being acoustic guitars with an electric add-on.

There are two kinds of acoustic electric guitars: the acoustic-electric classical guitar, and the basic acoustic electric guitar. The acoustic-electric classical guitar was designed to amplify the sound. This guitar is first an acoustic instrument, and the electric component is added. This idea was then improved upon, thus the invention of the acoustic electric guitar. Generally speaking, you can remember that acoustic electric guitars are primarily regarded as acoustic instruments because the pickups produce a signal from the vibration of the guitar’s body rather than from the vibration of the strings.

The most valued benefits of an acoustic electric guitar are 1) the ability to plug your instrument into a console without the need for expensive microphone equipment, and 2) the ability to play at very loud volumes while still maintaining the clear, sharp, beautiful tones of the acoustic guitar. These guitars produce both clarity of tone as well as volume and are an excellent choice for many musicians.

The term acoustic electric guitars is not at all a contradiction of terms, rather it refers to the type of guitar that produces an incredible sound at concert levels by its innovative design.
