Hard Shell

Was there ever a Gibson black hard shell case with light pink linings?

I am bought a Gibson Les Paul Custom 1973 and the seller claims the hard shell case is the original which is black with light pink linings. Yet, when I do any type of research, I can only find brown with hot pink lining or black and purple lining. The case doesn't have the Gibson emblem on it either.

it's probably simply because the fabric has faded over the years. it's thirty five years old. most everything fades over time and with exposure to light so it's reasonable that the hot pink has faded to light pink.

Comparing 6 String And 12 String Guitars

6-string or 12-string Acoustic guitar, which should you get? Both have pros and cons, and both are excellent instruments, depending on what you're looking to accomplish on guitar and how much you are willing to spend. In this article, we'll go over both guitars, which will hopefully help you make an educated decision on which to purchase.

The Main Difference Between Both Guitars:

The major difference, of course, is the number of strings. On a 6-string Acoustic guitar in standard tuning, there is one low e, one a, one d, one g, one b and one high e string, in that order. A 12-string acoustic has two low e, two a, two d, two g, two b, and two high e strings, all in that order. 12-string guitars have the ability to be tuned in two different tunings, while 6-string guitars don't. On the other hand, 12-string guitars also have a lot more tension on their necks, and as a result, their necks tend to warp after only a few years of playing.

Which should I pick?

That's a good question, and it depends on a few different things, all of which are discussed here:

The Advantages of a 6-String

To start with, 6-string guitars are much easier to learn than 12-strings are. This is because of the number of strings and how close together they are on the 12-string. It is nearly impossible to perform certain guitar techniques (like bends) on the 12-string guitar, and significantly harder to tune the guitar and change strings. Also, string picking is complicated by the number of strings. Thus, 6-string guitars are really ideal for those looking to play lead Acoustic guitar, that is, those who want to play a lot of individual notes (not just chords) and use guitar techniques like bends/slides/hammer-ons/pull-offs etc. Beginners will also have an easier time learning to play guitar on a 6-string than on a 12-string, for the reasons mentioned above.

The Advantages of a 12-string

Despite what was said in the last paragraph, there are quite a few advantages to 12-string guitars. 12-string guitars produce a very rich, bright sound. This is because they have twice the number of strings as a 6-string does. Chords strummed on a 12-string guitar will sound a lot richer (better) than those strummed on a 12-string. Additionally, the 12-string guitar gives you the option of using two different tunings. You can't do that on the 6-string. Beginners can learn to play 12-string guitars, but it will take a bit more practice to master than the 6-string. However, if you can master a 12-string, a 6-string guitar will be very easy to play.

What to keep in mind

Most musicians who use 12-string guitars use the 6-string guitar as their primary instrument. They usually pull out the 12-string when a song calls for a big, bright rhythm sound. So, if the songs you want to play feature mainly chords (and the songs call for a very rich sound) then a 12-string would be a good purchase, even if you are a beginner. The learning curve on a 12-string would obviously be steeper, but it would still be doable and worth it. If, however, you are looking to play songs with chords and individual notes, or simply want an instrument that isn't as complex and difficult to learn, a 6-string guitar is your best bet. You might also want to consider cost. Good 12-string guitars are usually $100-$200 more than good 6-string guitars. If you're on a budget, you'll probably want to pick the 6-string guitar.

How to Play Guitar Effortlessly Like a Master

Do you want to lean how to play guitar like the masters? If so, then here are a few tips to get you heading in the right direction.

Did you ever notice that when people see a guitar master play (or any great instrumentalist for that matter), they all seem to say the same things? He/she plays so effortlessly, they make it look so easy, they don’t even seem to be trying…

Do you see a pattern here? The great guitarists all play in such a manner that it looks effortless, it looks easy. And do you know what the secret is? It is easy. And yes, I know, they’ve played for many years, they’ve mastered the guitar and as a result they now play effortlessly. Seems so obvious. But the secret that nobody seems to talk about is this.

Great guitarists did not struggle for years, playing everything with a lot of tension and struggle and then somehow after many years they suddenly began to play effortlessly. No, in fact, they started out playing effortlessly from the beginning. Yes, they started with the end in mind. They played effortlessly from the moment that they began to work on the piece of music. Playing effortlessly is not something that comes after years of struggle and stress. In fact, you can begin to play effortlessly starting with your first guitar lesson. And if you have a wise and experienced teacher they will have gotten you started on that path on day one.

What this means is that you must play in a relaxed and effortless way from the moment you first pick up the guitar. Struggle, strain and stress do not lead to relaxation. It is only a lack of strain and relaxation that leads to further relaxation.

If you had a friend who was very stressed, would you recommend that they go for a drive in rush hour traffic in order to relax? Of course not. You would recommend that they do something relaxing in order to get relaxed.

So why is it, that we think that if we struggle with our guitar playing, if we tense our muscles and aggressively attack our pieces that this will lead to relaxed and effortless guitar playing. It does not make any sense. It is important that you contemplate these concepts if you want to learn how to play guitar effortlessly.

Guitar and Bass Repair: Improving Tone, Action and Sustain Without Spending a Nickel Part Three

Part Two of this article covered how to properly adjust truss rods and optimize the relief of a bass or guitar based on a standard reference. Part Three will present specific examples describing how to correct certain types of fret buzz, upbowed, backbowed or twisted necks by adjusting a truss rod. Part Three will also describe how to fine-tune a truss rod to optimize an instrument’s relief based on its individual characteristics. It is recommended that you read Parts One and Two of this article before reading Part Three. Please read the following article in its entirety before making adjustments to your own instrument.

Correcting Bowing, Twisting and Fret Buzz

The following examples will describe basic truss rod adjustments that will correct some common problems. Keep the following in mind while reading the examples:

1. Truss rods do not lower the strings, nor does their adjustment necessarily improve the instrument’s action in every situation.

2. Truss rods only change the curve/bow of the neck. Adjusting the truss rod will not bring the strings closer to the neck, but in some cases may bring the neck closer to the strings, improving action.

3. Adjusting the truss rod alone may not be enough to eliminate fret buzz. Certain fret buzzes may only be corrected by raising the action, leveling the frets, etc. If the truss rod adjustments in this article do not cure the fret buzzes of your instrument, consider consulting a professional luthier.

Example 1: Severe Relief

Playing the frets in the middle of the neck in Figure 1 is likely to cause fret buzz and the amount of relief may adversely affect the instrument’s action. To fix this problem, tighten the truss rod (don’t forget to follow the procedures for proper rod adjustments detailed in Part Two of this article).

Once you have adjusted out all but a small amount of relief, check the tuning and play the instrument. If the instrument has developed new fret buzzes, you may have taken out too much relief and should loosen the rod slightly. Proper relief generally improves action and reduces or eliminates fret buzz.

Example 2: No Relief

The instrument depicted in Figure 2 may buzz when its strings are played open or fretted, especially if its action is relatively low or the frets are uneven. If the instrument does not buzz at all, its relief is already optimized. If there is fret buzz, loosen the truss rod slightly, re-tune and play the instrument, checking to see if you have eliminated the buzz. Repeat until the instrument no longer buzzes, at which point you will have optimized its relief.

Example 3: Severe Backbow

The guitar in Figure 3 playing any fret below the middle of the fretboard probably causes buzz. If the backbow is severe loosen the rod significantly, if not all the way, until the neck shows a slight amount of relief. A severely backbowed neck may take as much as a day or two to adjust to the lack of rod tension; be prepared to set the instrument aside and wait.

If the backbow does not go away, do not despair. If the instrument has a two-way (double action) truss rod, you are in luck! A two-way truss rod can cause a backbow or an upbow to the neck. To add relief to a neck with a double action truss rod, simply continue to turn the adjuster in the loosening direction until the neck has a small amount of relief. If the instrument has only a single action truss rod and the neck does not show any relief, consult a luthier or repair technician.

Example 4: Twisted Neck

Twisted necks cannot normally be corrected by either single or double action truss rods alone. Twists can be taken out in instruments with two independent truss rods in the neck. The dual rods can be independently tightened to correct the twist. For example, a clockwise twist could be corrected by tightening the rod on the bass side and/or loosening the rod on the treble side. Dual truss rod systems are relatively rare however, so other means to correct the twist must be used. A twisted neck can sometimes be corrected by changing some of the strings. Adding heavier gauge strings to the side that has less twist may improve or correct a twist. Conversely, switching to lighter gauge strings on the side with more twist may have a similar effect. If the latter or former methods fail alone, they can be combined to have a greater effect on the twist.

Fine Tuning a Truss Rod

Most guitar and bass necks require about a business card’s thickness of relief to optimize their performance. Every instrument has its own unique characteristics and quirks however, and most can be further optimized by carefully fine-tuning their truss rods. To fine-tune the truss rod of your instrument, first adjust it until it has a business card’s thickness of relief. Next, play all of the frets for each string, listening for fret buzz.

If there is no buzz:

1) Tighten the truss rod slightly, further reducing the relief.

2) Re-tune the instrument, allow the neck to adjust to the increased tension and play all of the frets for each string, once again listening for buzz.

3) Repeat steps one and two until you notice some fret buzz, then loosen the truss rod just slightly enough to eliminate the buzz.

If there is buzz:

1) Loosen the truss rod slightly, increasing the relief.

2) Re-tune the instrument, allow the neck to adjust to the decreased tension and play all of the frets for each string.

3) Repeat steps one and two until the fret buzz is eliminated.

Once you have followed through with the above steps, you will have successfully fine-tuned your instrument’s truss rod.

Given the information in Parts One, Two and Three of this article, you should now have a fairly thorough understanding of truss rods and how to use them to improve your instrument.
