6 Methods of Tuning a Guitar

Tuning Pegs

Your guitar will need tuning on a regular basis. To do this, you need to know the names of the strings and how they should sound. When you are playing the guitar, the upper most string (6th), plays the lowest note. This can lead to confusion when instructions refer to the 'top' string. Generally 'top' and 'bottom' refer to the pitch (high and low) of the string rather than its position.

Starting with the 6th (bottom) string, the tuning is:

BASS TREBLE

There are various ways to tune:-

1. Using a pitch pipe. A six note pitch pipe will give you the notes you need for tuning, although this is not as easy as it sounds since the timbre of the two instruments can make the matching of pitch difficult for the beginner.

2. Using a piano.

3. Online Guitar Tuner

4. Tuning Fork

5. Electronic tuner.

6. Relative tuning also referred to as open E tuning. This involves tuning the 6th string to E from a known source such as a pitch pipe, a piano or a tuning fork, and then using this as a basis for tuning the other strings by:-

a) Fretting or stopping the 6th string at the 5th fret. (A fret is the space between fret bars on the finger board of the guitar so the first space is the first fret). Play the note. This should give you an A, which is the note to which you should tune the 5th string using the tuning pegs, until the two notes seem to be of he same pitch.

b) Stop the 5th string at the 5th fret. This gives you a D, which is the note you need to tune the 4th string to.

c) Play the 4th string, fretting it at the 5th fret. This gives you a G, which is the note to which you should tune the 3rd string.

d) Careful! Play the 3rd string at the 4th fret. This gives you a B, which is the note you need for the 2nd string.

e) Play the 2nd string at the 5th fret. This gives you an E, which is the note you need to tune the 1st string to.

This sort of thing does get easier with practice. If you now play the 1st and 6th strings, they should sound good together as they are both tuned to E, two octaves apart.

If you are happy with the tuning, it is a good idea to record the pitch of each string for future reference.

depends what sort of music you're playing, for rock music, maybe a Hughes and Kettner amp, large marshall speaker(s), Dunlop wah-wah pedal, and a digital reverb pedal. All depends on the sort of sound you want. If you go to your local music store they will probably let you test allot of the kit before purchase to check if you like the sound.

Should i get the fender mustang or fender jaguar ?

ok right now all i have is a sqiur fender stratocaster becouse thats all i could afford , but now i want a guitar that can go from clean rock to dirty rock with out sounding like crap ! thats worth saving for.

more questions -
well i heard the mustang is great in grunge sound but always gos out of tune & the jaguar has a nice rock sound but the cost is huge !! What do you think i should get ??

Both are great guitars, so I'd go to your local guitar center and see if they have them. The best 'stangs and jags were made in the 60's and they are pretty pricey.....$1500-$4000. Another idea is an Epi SG model. Just switch out the standard pups for Gibson Dirty Fingers and get ready to ROCK! I have this set up and love it. I own 18 guitars right now and they go from a Les Paul Black Beauty Custom 3 to an old Cobain Epi. I also have an EC signature Strat, an 89 Strat Plus Deluxe, a 57 reissue Strat, a Gold Top Epi, as well as the SG I mentioned. Been rockin' for 40 years now (since I was 10) and have not sloed down a bit. Rock and Roll will never die!

putting my guitar back together?

i had to take my guitar apart, due to me dropping it, and the pickups were broken, the amp wouldn't pick up a signal

it's an electric Jay Turser Stratocaster.

i only have the body and neck, nothing else

what all do i need, i have a pick guard, but no volume or tone controls, i dont have the pickups, nor the bridge

Hello! I really don’t understand why you only have the body, neck, and pickguard left, when all you did was drop the guitar. Further, I don’t see how you broke the pickups, since they are somewhat protected by the strings, plus the body and neck are both still intact. The fact that there was no signal at the amplifier is certainly understandable; however, that could have just been a broken wire. I am not challenging your assessment, only trying to clarify why you feel it is necessary to replace all the parts. Nonetheless, if you truly do need to find new components, there are many sites that sell replacement Stratocaster parts (see http://www.allparts.com/ , http://www.marshallparts.com/Default.asp , http://www.stewmac.com/ , http://www.warmoth.com/Pages/Guitar.aspx , http://www.dguitarparts.com/ , http://www.guitarpartsonline.com/ , and http://www.guitarpartsdepot.com/ for a few notables); however, the cost to purchase the new pieces will most certainly be more than the street price of brand new Jay Turser guitar (see http://www.musiclandcentral.com/jayturstrats1.html for example). Even if you buy a less-expensive loaded pickguard assembly (recommended, rather than buy the components and assemble), and add in the bridge parts, you will be spending close to $200. My advice would be to save the parts you have left as replacements, and go for a new instrument. There is no shame in abandoning a lost cause! Best regards, Dana

Vintage Guitar has been in the market for the past 25 years. There are so many lovers of vintage guitar, many who think of those who play guitar first remember the name vintage.

Vintage stands for brand, like Fender and Gibson apparel. In fact, vintage covers a big family of guitars, each unique in characteristics with different varieties of guitars including: Alembic Guitars, Aria Guitars, Armstrong Guitars, B.C. Rich guitars, Benedetto Vintage Guitars and many more.

The Alembic Vintage Guitar is the smaller part of rock and roll guitar legends. It is highly used among performers and well appreciated by listening audience round the world. Ron and Susan Wickersham created alembic Vintage Guitar in 1969. The role of the Alembic was to improve the sound quality of both live concepts and the concepts recorded.
