Fender Effects Pedals and Amp

Today’s guitar players have an almost infinite array of electric guitar effects pedals available, creating effects at the touch or ‘stomp’ of a button; hence they are often referred to as ‘stomp boxes’.  You’re not limited to a single pedal.  Several can be connected at once using patch cables.  Alternately, you may want to connect your effects pedals together onto a patch board.  This allows you to collect all your effects into one place to facilitate transportation and streamline the organization.

It’s worth noting that if you have too many pedals connected together, this can result in an irritating hum or buzz.  This can be corrected by the use of a noise gate pedal.

Here are a few of the more popular effects pedals available today:-

Distortion

As its name implies, it clips the signal, affording it a distorted sound which has been extensively adopted by players of Heavy Metal and Hard Rock.

Chorus

A chorus medal duplicates the signal and mixes it back in with the original sound, creating a lush and fuller chorus effect.

Flanger

A flanger copies the signal like the chorus pedal but adds a delay but with a series of repeats.  These repeats are alternately longer and shorter, producing a still thicker effect.

Wah Wah

Made famous by Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton, the wah wah pedal modifies the signal by allowing higher and lower frequencies through as the pedal is rocked, much like the accelerator pedal of a car.  The name is onomatopoeic.

Reverb

As in ‘reverberation’, this adds an echo to the original signal.

Talk Box

A Talk Box incorporates a speaker with an air-tight plastic tube attached to it.  The end is taped to the microphone, extending far enough for the player to put it into their mouth.  By changing the shape of the mouth, it is possible to modify the sound produced.  For a good example of its use, listen to Peter Frampton’s classic ‘Show me the way’.

Boost

At the flick of a switch, this simply turns up the volume, or, alternately, takes it down.  It may be used in preparation for a guitar solo, or to let a quieter instrument through.

Overdrive

Overdrive offers a form of ‘smoother’ distortion.  It seeks to emulate the sound made by an amp pushed beyond its recommended limitations.

Distortion

This is the gear above Overdrive.  Listen to Van Halen if you don’t know what I’m talking about.

Fuzz

Dave Davies of the Kinks achieved this effect by slashing the internal walls of his speaker cabinet.  Ike Turner, reputedly, did it by simply dropping the thing.  The effect is a hard, gritty form of distortion.  Listen to the Kinks’ ‘You Really Got Me’ or ‘All day and All of the Night’.

Compressor

Very popular in Country and Western music, the Compressor seeks to maintain a middling volume level.  It makes the loud parts quieter and the quiet parts louder.

Delay

As its name implies, it copies the signal, enabling you to have a sound repeated once or several times.  Think Roy Harper or, perish the thought, U2.

There are a host of other effects available to today’s electric guitarists.  Most stores will allow you to try their electric guitar effects pedals at your leisure.  So shop around and experiment and don’t forget to look online for some of the best deals available.

Left Hand Guitarists and Left Handed Guitars

Left Hand guitar players the world over have always had a problem with availability of left handed guitars.

Many left handed people newly learning to play guitar end up learning to play right handed out of frustration. Many experienced left handed guitarists have simply become apathetic and given up looking for that which is abundant for right handed players. Not only is there a limited range of guitars, but the resources for learning are also pretty limited. This situation is the same in every country in the world.

It is not hard to understand. Of the world's population, left handed people are a minority compared to right handed people. Within this minority there is a further minority of left handed people who play guitar left handed. Despite the small percentage of left handed guitarists, there have been a number of iconic left handed players who have made a huge impact on the music scene. These include Jimi Hendrix, Paul McCartney, Tony Iommi, and Kurt Cobain.

Many of the big guitar manufacturers do not offer left hand versions of some of their popular guitars. to be fair, US guitar manufacturers, have been facing harder and harder times, year after year. We all know that ALL industry (that is trying to do the right thing and being honest) is suffering and this is proportional to the decline of education (kids can't learn, can't hold jobs), the rise of drugs (thank you psychiatrists for getting rich by doping a whole generation into a state of useless-ness while brainwashing parents into believing frying kids brains with drugs is good) and increase of social hardship due to the world economic crash that's going on (thanks Oil companies, banks, and government suppression) So it is tough for all.

Some guitar manufacturers offer left handed versions of their guitars through their Custom Shop. And although this is an attempt at service, the costs and waiting times can be quite painful.

This Guitar Museum Hits Just The Right Notes

The test of time often proves that you are dealing with a qualified, if not exceptional company. The Martin Guitar Co. was started in New York way back in 1833 by C.F. Martin Sr. Being a native of Germany, based on some obscure information, the move to New York is somewhat comical in nature. Mr. Martin was a guitar maker, or luthier. His woodworking prowess caused much pressure from the Cabinet Makers Guild and The Violin Makers Guild to join their Unions(yes, they had unions that long ago). Within several years he fled to America to open The Martin Guitar Company in New York. However two years later the factory was moved to Nazareth, Pa. and has remained there and expanded as necessary ever since then.

The first thing that hits you as you enter the factory is a quote from Eric Clapton "If I could choose what to come back as, it would be a Martin OM-45". Words like this brought to mind how much people love their Martin guitars. I specifically mean love them for the beauty, materials and love put into the building of each Martin Guitar. Simply put, because of the exquisite workmanship of Martin guitars and their unmatched tone and playability, they are the gold standard for aspiring acoustic guitarists. To have a Martin guitar, or even a custom Martin is one of the few rites in their lifetime with this amount of significance.

Martin openly puffs up their chest when it comes to their place in American music and all of the noted(no pun intended) musicians who have used and swear by their instruments. As the Martin Company celebrates their 175th year of business one gets the feeling that the tremendous heritage created will continue in greatness.

Some of the artists who use Martin guitars have CD and album covers displayed on one of the walls. Representing such artists as Elvis Presley, Jimmie Rogers, Paul Simon, Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Hank Williams and Stephen Stills. Don't forget Andy Griffith played a D-18 model! So many icons have played Martin guitars there are not enough wall space to honor fall of them.

During the factory tour, the various steps that include more than 3oo very precise procedures and a few weeks of time become very evident. This is no jerry rig factory. It has a blend of the most modern hi-tech equipment with a big helping of old world craftsmanship. For some this part of the tour may be tedious, for people who like to know, this is an interesting and remarkable story of cutting, machining and assembling a guitar masterpiece.

The museum is what most folks come for. From some of the 19th century instruments that look awkward and bulky to the transition to modern styled guitars, the museum guides have the type of enthusiasm for Martin guitars that is infectious. The guide can also tell you in great detail very enthusiastically about every one of the 170 plus guitars on display.

Before I forget, it is very important to note that not only can you admire these beautiful guitars, but you are encouraged to pick one up and start to pluck a few notes. And, you are not limited to their least expensive models. Want to play an Eric Clapton custom guitar, them pick it up and go to town. they don't mind. In fact if you listen closely, their are plenty of people strumming their favorite tunes in the players room.

Note: If you dig The Three Stooges, the Stoogeum is in Philly. It is fantastic and worth every bit if not more than the cost of the tour, which is free.

If you love guitars like the folks at Guitar players Center, than this is the type of relaxed, fun and informative trip to take. With the amount of experience and love put into the manufacturing process, it would be hard not wanting a Martin guitar after the tour.

It seems, from what I've found though, that Giles Guitar company stopped making guitars in 1998. Probably why you can't find much info on them.
