You Can't Sell Antique Appliances on The Internet, Can You?

When John Jowers went to work at his father's appliance company, he never thought it would lead to a sideline business restoring antique refrigerators. But now their "cool" appliances are doing a hot business on the web.

Those of us who are, to put it politely, in our prime, may remember a time when a refrigerator wasn't just a big, rectangular box in the kitchen.

It was a sleek, aerodynamic piece of industrial art. A Philco or Frigidaire looked like it had been designed with the same artistic flair as a ´57 Chevy.

Maybe we even remember the old GE generator top fridge at grandma's house. Those were the days!

In Clayton, Georgia, a town in the Appalachian foothills an hour and a half outside of Atlanta, John Jowers is doing a brisk business keeping a piece of Americana alive.

John and his team at Antique Appliances have expanded his father's appliance business, originally founded in 1958, to include the full restoration of vintage refrigerators and stoves for a growing number of customers who crave the style and nostalgia of a bygone era.

Clayton is a resort area, and the population base shifts drastically from winter to summer. And while he had never given any thought to restoring vintage appliances, John knew that he had to find a way to build his sales and keep his team occupied during the off-season.

"In the winter months, you have to keep your workers on board and busy. A couple of the guys came to me and said `hey, there's an old refrigerator in the back of the warehouse. Do you mind if we paint it red?´ and I said, if it keeps you busy, go ahead!"

"We put it in our front window as part of a Christmas display, and suddenly someone wanted to buy it!

Once it was gone, the phone began to ring off the hook - everyone wanted to know where the little red refrigerator had gone! So, we began doing one-off pieces for people locally. We dabbled in it for a couple of years, and someone convinced me that there really was a market for what we were doing, so I decided to build a web site."

"I depend on the Internet. Without it I wouldn't have the antique business."

"If I were trying to market these items in a 100-mile radius, there simply aren't enough potential clients that want these products or have the money to spend to make it a viable business. 98% of the business I do with the vintage appliances comes from the Internet."

His refurnished stoves and refrigerators have found homes all across the country and beyond.

"Very few of our clients are in our general area. We keep a map up in the office and we peg every city that we go to or ship to, and when you look at the map, the bulk of the clients have been in the New England states. Although we've shipped something to almost every state in the Union at this point, the Midwest and the Northeast have been our biggest demand areas."

He believes that much of his success, both online and off, stems from the fact that he is offering a truly unique service. Antique Appliances is the only company in the US that specializes in the restoration of vintage refrigerators, and one of only a small number who restores vintage electric stoves.

Many companies are restoring gas stoves in the US because a gas stove is rather simple to repair and restore-no wiring, no moving parts, no chemicals involved. Electric stoves, however, are more complicated- a thorough knowledge of electrical systems is needed.

Refurbishing a refrigerator requires even more expertise: in addition to the electrical aspect, special certification is needed to handle the refrigerants and to clean the systems.

Most appliance restorers don't have the required know-how or certification. But because Jowers TV & Appliances was already in the business of selling new appliances, John had a pre-assembled team of qualified servicemen and technicians.

John has no plans to take his new appliance sales online. While Internet sales for niche items like vintage appliances are skyrocketing, the competition to move new inventory is stiff. He knows he would likely only lose money trying to compete for online sales with a large outlet like Sears.com or JCPenney.com.

He does, however, believe that his new appliance sales have been helped as more and more manufacturers have added search engines that allow customers to find authorized dealers in their geographic area.

He has seen a few sales locally that have come to him via GE.com, and feels that this allows smaller dealers to profit without investing in building a site.

John acknowledges that, when he left for college, the last thing he thought he'd do was to come back to a small town and work in the family business. But his work experience while in college made him realize that he really enjoyed taking full responsibility for customer satisfaction, something that is vital to a family business, but often of secondary importance to larger stores.

"As a teenager, when I went out on deliveries with the other guys and there was a problem, believe me, the customer would address ME with their concerns because they knew I was my father's son!"

"In college, I went to work part time in a local home improvement center. During my first week there, I saw my boss, the store's assistant manager, make a woman mad over a can of red paint.

I went into his office and I said, `you may fire me for saying this, but you've done the worst thing you could have done. If you had given her another can of paint, she would have walked out of the store satisfied, and never said a word about it. But mark my words, you've made her mad, you didn't give her another can of paint, and now she´s going to walk out of here and tell everyone in her bridge club and her church group, and you've probably lost 12 customers over a can of paint.´"

"I went home that night and asked myself what I wanted to do with my life, if I could really be happy somewhere climbing the corporate ladder but having no say-so about customer satisfaction, where you'll always have to hand it off to another person. Suddenly, the family business seemed like the right choice."

Personally, I invested in the BOSS NS-2 Noise Suppressor pedal, as I play a lot of distorted metal guitar (as apparently you do as well, judging by the "Weapon" pedal) and it cuts out the 'hum' almost completely. Also, and this is why I'm suggesting it to you, it has the added bonus of being able to power a bunch of other pedals with the 'daisy chain' adapter. Both are readily available at Guitar Center or your local, well-stocked music store. At the least, they should be able to order them for you. If not, quit shopping there!

But the 1Spot's I can't personally attest to (I've only heard great things about them) however, the daisy chain is cheaper overall than buying 6 of those bad boys anyway. So, there's plenty of options. And don't forget to call your local guitar center. Chances are, they have other options as well, and there's probably a guy or two there who has built a DIY pedalboard of their own and would be more than happy to share blueprints/ideas/tips with you.

Types Of Flanges And How To Flange Pedal Works

Flanges are used to connect together pipes or to connect a pipe to a choke, tee, valve or other equipment. There are seven main types of flanges and they come in rectangular, square and round shapes to accommodate a variety of needs and projects.

Lap Joint Flange
For pipes that are frequently taken apart for repair or replacement, lap joint flanges are used. These flanges are used with a universal stub-end insert that is easily rotated and makes it easy to line up bolt holes. This type of flange is used for junctures that do not come in contact with anything flowing through the pipes, which increases their durability and renders them reusable. Caution should be taken not to use lap joint flanges for jobs where high temperatures or high pressure conditions are possible.

Slip-on Flange
Slip-on flanges are thinner than most flanges as they are slid over pipe ends, easily aligned with bolt holes, and then permanently welded into place. Unlike lap joint flanges, they are designed to withstand contact with liquids and can withstand low-pressure atmosphere. They are stronger than other flanges, low cost and dependable at preventing leaks.

Threaded Pipe Flange
This popular type of flange not only comes in a wide range of materials and sizes, it can also be attached to pipes without welding, as it is a threaded flange. Extremely useful in connecting small pipes, it is a low cost flange that can be safely used in highly explosive and high pressure areas of projects and machinery.

Weld Neck Flange
The most popular type of high pressure pipe flange is the weld neck flange. The tapered hub design provides an extremely strong connection and these flanges can be repeatedly manipulated and bent without compromising the quality of the material and/or connection. The weld neck flange is highly resistant to extreme high and low temperatures.

Socket Welding Flange
The socket welding flange was created specifically for small piping that must withstand high pressure and/or contact with chemicals. With expert grinding and welding, socket welding flanges allow the unfettered flow of any type of liquid.

Blind Flanges
These flanges are commonly used to seal or blank off the ends of valves and pipes. They are always round and have bolt holes around their perimeter. They are economical.

Reducing Flange
Some piping system designs require constant changes in pipe diameters to accommodate changing conditions. The reducing flange economically connects different types and sizes of flanges, can endure extreme changes in pressure and are easy to attach.

Creating the Effect
To produce the flanging effect, a flanger pedal mixes two identical signals together from your instrument. One of these signals is then delayed in varying amounts. The delayed track is slowed down very slightly (as if one was gently pushing down on a tape reel as playing and then sped up in order to catch up with the other track. This creates a spinning, sweeping effect like the sound of a jet plane passing overhead.

Delay Amounts
Although flanger pedals delay the copied signal, there is no echo heard. This is because the delay times amount only to the range of one to 10 milliseconds. The human ear can only distinguish an echo if the delay is over about 50 milliseconds. Instead, as the low amounts of delay are used and varied within this tiny range, the listener will only detect the pitch modulation from the delayed track as its signal is read slower (creating a slightly lower pitch) and then faster (for a higher pitch).

Controlling the Sound
Most flanger pedals allow you to shape your sound by rotating dials that control the amount of delay added to the delayed signal. This is usually labeled as the "depth" control although on some pedals it will read "mix." The depth level determines how pronounced the notches in the flanger effect will sound. Some pedals also have a sweep depth (sometimes called width) dial to control how noticeable the pitch modulation in your flanger effect will be.

5 Basic Steps to Fix That Blue Screen of Death

Did your computer just come to a grinding halt and freeze at a blue screen showing a lot of messages in white? You've just encountered the famous Blue Screen resulting from a Windows Stop error - more colorfully known among the Windows Operating System user community as the Blue Screen of Death or BSOD. If this has just happened to you don't despair, help is at hand!

Most Blue Screen situations come up after some kind of Software or Hardware install or uninstall resulting in a hardware or software error from which Windows cannot gracefully recover.

A careful perusal of the screen shows you the error number associated with the crash, a recommendation from Windows on the action you should take, and in the end, the name of the file that caused the crash.

In case you just saw the Blue Screen, here are a few steps you could follow to fix it:

1. Restart the Computer - Most of the errors related to the Blue Screen can be solved with a simple reboot. If the error persists, you may need to follow the steps given below.

2. Restart in Safe Mode - Windows loads only a minimal set of drivers in safe mode and it is easy to isolate any software-related problem. When you restart the computer and the Power-On Self-test (POST) screen is displayed, hit F8 and choose Safe Mode in the Advanced Options Menu that appears and hit Enter. Once Windows is loaded, you can uninstall and reinstall the software that caused the error.

3. Use Last Known Good Configuration - If starting Windows in safe mode doesn't work, you can reboot and choose the Advanced Options menu as before, to boot into the last known good configuration. This causes a System Restore to the point just before the installation or uninstall.

4. Disconnect New/Faulty Hardware - If you are unable to use the last known good configuration, the probability of a hardware error is very high and you may need to disconnect any hardware installed just prior to the crash or check if any of your hardware is faulty. Once the offending hardware device is removed or replaced, the problem should be fixed.

5. Repair/Reinstall Windows - If none of the steps above are able to get rid of the Blue Screen, it is possible that the Windows system files are irreparably corrupt and you should consider repairing the Windows installation. Insert the Windows CD-ROM into the drive and boot from CD-ROM drive. You will be led to the Windows Recovery console using which you can repair windows and attempt to reboot. If this fails too, then you may have to reinstall the entire Windows Operating System using the CD-ROM.

Here's a great diet to get rid of belly fat. First, let me ask you a question: Which is better for getting rid of belly fat? Walking, or doing crunches?

If you guessed crunches, you're dead wrong!

Why?

Crunches build muscle.

Walking burns calories.

You want the latter, you want to burn calories. You want to burn more calories than you take in. This is the formula for success.

Take in less, burn more, and that's the key!
