Connecting Apple MacBook Pro or Iphone to Bass Amplifier Cabinet?
I have a 15" MacBook Pro as well as an iPhone 3G S and I want to know what kind of cable(s) or jacks to use to play music from either device and use my bass amp (head and cabinet) to amplify the music. Just to connect the two together to play music basically.
There are a couple ways, both of which you'll need a 3 mm patch cable (you can get these in several different lengths),
1) Plug one end of the cable into your head phone jack, and the other into a 3mm stereo to mono converter and that a 3mm mono to 1/4 inch jack. Plug the 1/4" jack into the low gain input of your head.
2) You might be able to find a 3mm stereo to 1/4" mono converter. Hook this up the same way.
Note, plugging a stereo jack into a mono input will result in only one channel (ie left or right) being put through and the other will be left out. You must get a stereo to mono converter of some sort between the headphone jack and your head.
One bit of advice: if you use your Mac, get a really long patch cable and keep the computer away from the cabs - the magnetic pulsations from your speakers will fry the hard drive. Your iPhone uses flash memory and isn't effected by magnets (but it might possibly mess up your compass) - use your iPhone when possible.
I would also recommend running your audio through a eq pedal
both as a buffer and to rectify your tone (bass amps and cabs aren't meant to play audio that way).
