Guitarists: what do you think of these value brands?
Jay Turser
Xaviere
Oscar Schmidt
Greg Bennett
Dean
I've played Jay Turser, Dean and Oscar Schmidt guitars and they were all much nicer than I'd been led to believe (by guitar snobs who will only play certain brands). I liked the Oscar Schmidt one so much I bought it and the only thing I had to do to make it really playable was file the frets to make them a little smoother. The Dean I played was designed for metal and had a nice thin neck and great action. The Jay Turser one I tried was a Strat copy and it wasn't as nice as a Strat, but it was very playable. It had already been set up by someone at the guitar store, so it played nicely.
I've never played the other two brands so I've got no opinion of them. But if you have a chance to play any of them at a guitar store, it's worth seeing how each one feels to you.

what is the best ukulele brand?
i want to get a good koa concert uke that is worth the buy and is in the price range of $100-$150. im thinking about buying the oscar schmidt ou5 but i just want to see if theres better ones out there. i also want to buy a good chromatic tuner since im not a pro and i always get my older ukes "un-tuned" but i still want to make sure that my uke sounds perfect. i would really appreciate the suggestions and along with those suggestions, please include the link where i can purchase it. thank you.
Kamaka is one of the best. They are made in Hawaii (see URL). But tone is what counts. A large music store will hopefully have a selection. Play them and pick on sound, not brand name.
Regarding the tuning, just make the "D" string sound nice, then tune the rest to that. You only need the chromatic tuner if you will be tuning with a group. Also, have the pegs replaced with the screw type used on guitars and the tuning will hold for a much longer time.
