Help with a brand new half stack?
My grandparents decided to buy me a marshall half stack, but they bought the head and cabinet seperate. I got them together and plugged it all up but i head a loud click(from the head, not cabinet) and now the head will not turn on??
Also, the cabinet only has 1 cable running out of the back and i was wondering if i could plug that into my processor in the output jack. if i do will it work the same as plugging an amp into the processor?
Hi, first of al congratulations! You have awesome grandparents. I'm a long time sound engineer and I've dealt with amps and speakers as my job for years.
First of all, the click sound:I am having a hard time picturing your set up due to how you worded your question. (1) Do you have separate head and two cabinets? (2) Or do you have a COMBO head/cabinet in one stacked on just another cabinet?
In the case of (1) I don't see how a "loud" sound can come from an amplifier. How loud was it? At this point regardless of which set up you have, it sounds like you blew a fuse, due to the fact that you have no power. Check the fuse, there may be more than one, they are easy to find they look like a knob on the back, just twist it and out it will come. Keep a supply of fuses with you. These MFrs draw a lot of current, so blowing a fuse is not a big deal. If it keeps happening you will want to find out why it is blowing.
In the case of (2), the loud sound seems to have been broadcast through the speakers? This still sounds like a blown fuse. With combo amps you have to be even more careful about popping fuses, plugging in or out while amp is on and up because you can not separate the speakrs from the amp, they are built in. But my diagnosis remains the same. A fuse.
What kind of processor do you have? I don't understand the idea of plugging an amp into a processor. That is the opposite of how it works. Do a little reading on signal flow.
You want all your effects to receive input from your guitar and then go IN to the amp to get amplified. Some amps are set up to where you can go line out from the amp into something else, like a recorder/mixer or other processor.
If your amp has this it will be labeled 'output' or line out. The problem is that you have to use one of your outputs to go into your speaker cabinets(s). If you want you can go out of your amp into a processor and then into your speaker BUT, you will need an inline preamp (or atinuator or filter) to do this properly lest you send a very distorted signal into your cabinet.
Frankly, I just can't think of a practical reason to do what you are describing. I would have a known guitar tech come over, pay him 50 bucks just to check everything over and give some suggestions. In other words I am recommending that you just put all your effects and processors before the amp and just use the amp output to go straight into the cabinet.
The jack on the back of your speaker cabinet, there should be two, one in one out. If there is only one, then it is definitely an input. Some companies like Carvin actually have smart jacs that serve as both input or output and I have no idea how they make that work but it does. But as with my comments above, even more so in this case, I can't imagine why you would want to go out of a speaker jack into something else. Just use the speaker jack for going to and from the amp as it is designed until you get enough knowledge to do the funky stuff later.
