Guitar Effects- Distortion and Fuzz?
whats the difference between distortion and fuzz, and which is better for Nirvana/Sonic Youth style playing

Strictly speaking, a fuzz is distortion, because anything that distorts your sound is distortion. A fuzz is a certain kind of distortion, a much more intense distortion. Scientifically speaking, it turns the rounded sound waves of an undistorted guitar into square waves. This is why a fuzztone sounds much more harsh and crude than distortion.
A distortion pedal often works by overdriving the amp, or simulating an overdriven amp. However, a fuzztone is an effect that does NOT sound like an overdriven amp. It sounds buzzy and snarly, like a chainsaw.
The DS-1 is a distortion pedal that is meant to simulate an overdriven amplifier. A fuzz pedal, like the Electro-Harmonix Big Muff Pi, gives more of a Smashing Pumpkins type sound with long sustain and lots of very dirty, grinding tone.
Nirvana and Sonic Youth used both fuzz and distortion pedals, and to make it more complicated, they sometimes used both at the same time! So probably your best bet is to have both in your pedal collection. I like the new Little Big Muff Pi fuzz by Electro-Harmonix, but there are a lot of fuzz pedals out there. Some of them sound very different from others, so make sure you try them all out. Some fuzz pedals sound very buzzy and trebly, and others are very fat and filthy.
