Safe way to test impedance on a guitar cabinet?
I just bought a used guitar cabinet, and I don't know the impedance rating.
The cabinet is a Peavy with two unmarked inputs on the back.
The head is a Mesa/Boogie Dual Rectifier with 16, 8, and 4 ohm outputs.
Would it be safest for the head and the cabinet to try the head's 4 ohm output first, and then work up to the 16 until one works?
Your best bet would be to buy or borrow a multimeter and set it to ohms (looks like a horse shoe, omega symbol) Plug your speaker cable into the back of the speaker cabinet, don't use a guitar cable it will screw up the impedance measurement and eventually damage the amp. When the cable is plugged into the speaker cabinet, measure the resistance with the multimeter. Put one lead on the tip and the other on the sleeve. Your reading will never be exactly at 16, 8 or 4 ohms but it's usually around that number like 10ohm reading will be 8 ohm setting on the amp.
